Details: Maple Leaf Educational Systems (MLES) is China’s largest private international K-12
school system and Canada’s first and largest offshore school system, offering a very
pleasant Monday to Friday work schedule in a very collegial and professional setting. We
are currently looking for energetic, enthusiastic ESL teachers to join the Maple Leaf
Team. We hire twice a year - for semester 1 positions starting mid-August/September, or
for semester 2 positions starting mid-February/March. Teachers receive a competitive
salary, annual return airfare, free accommodation, approximately 13 weeks of paid
vacation, and more.
MLES opened its first school in Dalian, PR China in 1995. Our schools are now located in
21 cities throughout China. The continued expansion of Maple Leaf Educational Systems
has increased our need for well qualified, TESL/TEFL certified ESL teachers.
Our school system includes private elementary and middle schools offering the Chinese
national curriculum and high schools delivering the BC Global Education Program
certified by the Ministry of Education, British Columbia, Canada. Underpinning student
success in all of our schools is an extensive ESL program taught jointly by a team of
internationally qualified ESL teachers and bilingual Chinese teachers. Due to the scope
and size of Maple Leaf Educational Systems, working with Maple Leaf offers teachers
the chance to work in a variety of locations and a variety of teaching environments from
large school settings with more than 2500 students to start-up schools in new locations
with fewer than 60 students.
Requirements:
• An undergraduate degree
• A minimum 100 hours of TESL or TEFL training from a recognized teacher training
institution
• Two years of teaching experience is expected (some flexibility with this requirement
may apply)
* For visa purposes, citizenship of applicant must be from a country that China identifies
as a native English speaking country.
Salary
Salary for fully qualified teachers is on a 4 step scale from $22,800USD to $30,000USD
per year. New teachers hired under special permission with less than two years’
experience begin at Step 1 of the MLES ESL Teacher salary scale.
Workload
The ESL Teacher will be at the School from Monday through Friday, five working days a
week. The school day is normally nine hours, including student supervision and a
generous lunch break. The average teaching load for ESL Teachers is approximately 25
hours per week. In addition to instructional periods ESL teachers lead club activities,
providing opportunities for informal English language learning and practice.

Accommodation
MLES provides free furnished apartments on-campus or in MLES owned off-campus
apartments where available. MLES staff at each school assist with initial accommodation
set up.
Orientation
Maple Leaf gives first-time to Maple Leaf teachers an additional 3,000 (RMB) (taxable) in
the first pay period to help offset the cost of initial living expenses incurred in moving to
China. This allowance is for initial purchases of basic living necessities.
Airfare
MLES provides up to $1,500USD for round trip airfare in each year of the contract from
the negotiated ’point of hire’ to the Chinese city in which the assigned school is located.
Vacation Entitlement
MLES provides a paid winter break of approximately 4 weeks and an approximately 6
week long summer break, along with one week in October and one week in May during
Chinese national holidays.
Visa and Immunizations
MLES covers most costs, up to specified limits, and assists with applying for visas and
resident permits in China.
Medical
MLES provides full international medical coverage.
Stock Incentive Bonus Plan
Maple Leaf teachers may be eligible to be awarded shares of Maple Leaf trading on the
Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Dependents Benefits
MLES provides medical insurance coverage, visas, immunizations, and annual flights for
a dependent spouse and dependent children living full time in China with the teacher.
MLES provides a school tuition discount for children of teachers.
