Has anyone taught English in Iraq or Kurdistan? I would love to hear about your experience. Thank you, Bahareh

I taught in Hawler/Erbil before the Islamic State chaos. The students were invariably enthusiastic and friendly. My class was mostly adults who had been abroad during the latter days of the Saddam period. Most already spoke multiple languages, so their minds had been opened to this. Unless you like spending all your time in shopping malls or foreign bars, there's not a lot to do. Get ready to watch three movies a day. Accommodation generally came with multichannel satellite tv. Limited restaurant choices, but the food is generally good and local shops well excellent Iranian ice-cream. I recommend it and am considering going back.

I taught in Zakho in 2015/16 and again in 2017/18. Loved it! Lived in Dohuk, and never ran out of things to do... hiking on the weekends, exploring nearby villages, Lalish, Al Qosh, etc. Food was amazing, people incredibly friendly. I'd definitely return if I had the chance.

Yes, I taught in Zakho, Kurdistan. I taught at BISK, my class was better than excellent, my apartment the best I've had anywhere and the people I worked with good. I would recommend BISK to anyone.

I think as a man you will be treated like a genius, but if you are a woman, you will be treated very differently. Generally, however the accommodation is excellent and most Kurdish people are very nice. Avoid working for any powerful clan member, or cousin of a member of the KRG, as they have strong connections with western countries and if you upset them, they will destroy your life, with the help of western authorities, even if you are totally innocent. The teaching is easy, and the students are mostly keen and enthusiastic. Beware of many locals claiming to have degrees or PhDs in Linguistics etc., mostly this is not true but they hate being called out. Most of these locals with MAs can teach using one method: grammar translation

I taught English and Planning courses in Kurdistan. However, I must warn you that the US State Department is currently warning all US citizens to not go to either Iraq or Kurdistan. A colleague who is Kurdish tells me that all the NGOs have withdrawn from Kurdistan, as the risk of kidnappings and murder is too high for them to operate in the area. This is a terrible loss to all those in need of NGOs in the area. It appears that, as in 2014, It is largely driven by ISIS (Daesh).
